The Wendigo: Boogeyman of the Artic Tundra

The Wendigo: Boogeyman of the Artic Tundra

The Wendigo is an evil spirit from Native American folklore. This terrifying creature feeds on unwary people that get too close. According to the folklore, a person could turn into a Wendigo by being too selfish and greedy… or eating other people!

It is often shown as a sickly thin humanoid with its skin pulled tightly over its emaciated frame, grey skin, icy cold heart, unfathomable appetite for flesh and a smell of death and decay. No matter which tribe the description came from, they all had one thing in common when it comes to the Wendigo: cannibalism. The original descriptions didn’t include antlers but they’ve been popularized and adopted as part of the look by pop culture. You can find the Wendigo referenced in all kinds of pop culture now from video games and books, to movies and TV shows.

Zombie with antlers… time to go hide under my bed!
