The Jackalope: America's Animal Amalgamation

The Jackalope: America's Animal Amalgamation

Yeehaw! No creature embodies the wild west quite like the Jackalope.

This mythical creature got it’s name from being a mix between a jackrabbit and an antelope. Reports of real-life jackalopes have mostly been dismissed as rabbits with diseases or parasites resulting in abnormal growths. In the 1930’s in Wyoming, two brothers heard stories about horned rabbits and being enterprising young men, skilled hunters and taxidermists; they MADE one. The first jackalope was a mounted specimen from a jackrabbit with deer antlers. It garnered so much attention that they created many more and sold them to bars and hotels all over the west (but mostly in Wyoming). They’re so beloved that Wyoming has even tried making it the official state mythological creature!
